Criterion Theatre

Brand development to help raise profile of the theatre as a venue.

Following the arrival of Stephen Fry as nonexecutive chairman, the Criterion Theatre wanted to raise its profile, increase footfall and promote the venue as a flexible event space while the stage was not in use.

We developed a new brand identity and toolkit focused on the heritage of the theatre and retaining the Eros figure from the statue in front of the theatre.

As part of the process we also researched and designed an historical timeline for use online and in print. We used imagery from the theatre’s archive which is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Most recently, we designed and developed a responsive website that integrated the theatre’s new ticketing software.

We refreshed the look and feel to include an extended colour palette inspired by theatre itself and commissioned a photo shoot to capture the theatre’s Victorian features and create a unique set of staff portraits. The site is both contemporary and functional but retains and showcases the historical elegance of the Cri.
