Gerald Caldwell Siordet

Commemorating the life of an artist, poet and soldier.

As we work on increasing amounts of digital projects one of the nicest projects that we worked on recently was a limited edition privately commissioned hardback book commemorating the life of a soldier who was killed, like so many others, during World War One. Gerald Caldwell Siordet was an artist and poet who died on February 9th 1917.

The book was written by Siordet’s great nephew James Ritchie and commissioned by James and his brother Andrew to commemorate his life 100 years after his death.

The volume brings to together Siordet’s own paintings and drawings as well a his poems and a number of very poignant letters he and his family wrote and received before, during and after the war. As well as Siordet’s own work the book also features a number of striking portraits of Gerald by a some of the best known artists of the day including John Singer Sargent, Glyn Philpot, Brian Hatton and Henry Scott Tuke.

TBW designed and typeset the book using the typefaces Goudy and P22 Johnston Underground both of which also happened to be 100 years old.

The book was printed by our friends at Hurtwood Press in Sussex. It is hand bound and section sewn with a foil blocked linen cover.

"thebigwindow have helped us create a really beautiful book to commemorate the life and work of our Great Uncle Jack on the 100th anniversary of his death. The team at TBW were terrific to work with and their design and production expertise ensured that the content was presented in a most imaginative, attractive and striking manner. My brother and I were delighted with the result and would without doubt use TBW again."
